Take me back to the twenties?

But is that really such a good idea?
"New York, 1922. The tempo of the city had changed sharply. The buildings were higher, the parties were bigger. The morals were looser and the liquor was cheaper." - The Great Gatsby (2013)
Gatsby was released earlier this year, a brand new rendition of an old film and an even older book. Directed by Baz Luhrmann, it made girls around the world envious of the fashion, the parties, and the way boys looked. For example, instead of pants hanging down around their ankles, exposing boxer shorts, think well-pressed suits with perfectly trimmed facial hair and slicked hair.

And then the girls. Flapper dresses, fancy cocktails and rich men. The areas of East and West Egg appealed to all of us. But as my friends and I gushed over all of the splendour of the most recent Gatsby film, we had to stop and wonder...Was it really a good life for the women of the twenties? Are the movies telling it like it is, or did the glitz and glamour gloss over the fact that these women might have lived their lives as male possessions? Would we, as girls in the twenty-first century, enjoy living a life possibly dominated and dictated by the male gender?

Take my twenties quiz (that I just made up) to see if you'd like to have lived in the twenties!

As a woman, would you most want to:
A) Get a job and do anything else you darn well want to
B) Vote and be a strong, independent woman
C) Raise a family and stay at home all the time.

Would you describe your style of dress as:
A) Stylish, sexy...whatever suits your mood!
B) Sexy and Comfortable
C) Conservative, like corsets and the typical style of dress for the olden days.

Do you believe that a woman and man should be:
A) Equal, but you hope that chivalry isn't completely dead!
B) Completely and totally equal, you're a feminist at heart
C) The man should always be in control

Your position on alcohol is:
A) Go for it!
B) A little party never killed nobody
C) Prohibition was a good thing

Results:
- Mostly A's:
You like living in the present. It suits you perfectly and you don't see why you'd revert to living the way that people did ages ago. It just doesn't make sense.

- Mostly B's:
You are a perfect twenties girl. It was a time of liberation and freedom for women, and you are a complete believer in women's rights and a stylish lifestyle!

- Mostly C's:
You would probably be best suited to living in the 1700s. You believe that society today is not good and you really wish that nothing had changed.

Well surprisingly, the twenties seemed to be, from an outsiders perspective, an era in which gender equality really started to kick off. After the war, the men realised how much they really, actually needed the assistance of women in difficult times. And not just for the purposes of bearing kids.

This assistance during the war, and the constant campaigning for equal rights led to women receiving the vote in the USA in 1920. The fact that women had the vote meant that millions of women across America flocked to voting offices to have their say for the first time. The dress style changes in this era and the dress style of women changed to more comfortable and sexier clothing.
Though many women still stayed at home as housewives, they at least had the choice to be who they wanted to be and do what they wanted to do, most of the time. More women were working and realised that they had the choice.

Even though I love living in the twenty-first century, I don't deny that the twenties might have been fun because of all the new changes that were taking place. It seems like it would have been fun! So girls, can I marry Gatsby?
