So what is Fangirlism and how do you find a cure?
Fangirling the act of being so obsessed by something that you scream like a girl, cry, cheer, and are happy and sad all at once. As well as every other emotion humanely possible. So Fangirlism is all of these things happening to you, basically the act of being a fangirl.
But when does it happen?
Well, in the times not related to pop culture, it can often happen with concerts by specific boy bands *cough* One Direction *cough*, and yes...they're hot. But are they really anything to faint and swoon over? And then we have the girls who are so obsessed with Justin Bieber that they cut their arms or shave their heads.
But that's not the type of fangirlism that we're looking at today. Today, we're looking at Pop Culture fangirling. I know, I know...a very risky topic! What if I insult someones OTP or accidently destroy a Ship(One true pairing, see the video on the right)?!
But I will do my best. So say you're obsessed with Harry Potter. This is immediately the most obvious one, cos let's face it:
1. Noone likes Twilight
2. It's one of the most amazing book series of all time!
3. I haven't read Lord of the Rings yet (But I have read The Hobbit...please don't kill me!)
4. Divergent is only just gathering steam.
5. Doctor Who is still a Niche for today's youth despite having it's 50th anniversary later this year!
6. I could go on forever but let's focus on Harry Potter.
So when you a Harry Potter fangirl, you dress like the characters, you quote all of the books and movies, you've watched A Very Potter Musical, A Very Potter Sequel and A Very Potter Senior Year on YouTube. As well as this, you cry every time you watch the movies (unless you're a fangirl who believes that the movies didn't do the books justice) and have read the books so much that they are falling apart. You may also have been one of the girls who was at the front of every line for the new book and has spent her time googling Harry Potter songs on YouTube.
You might not be all of these, but you can still be a fangirl.
So Fangirlism...definitely a real thing! Next, you have to ask yourself 3, very important questions.
1. Am I a Fangirl?
2. Do I want to be a Fangirl?
3. Do I want to minimise my nerdiness in order to help other people to relate to me better?
If you're happy with yourself and letting your Fangirl Flag Fly, then you're all good. If you would prefer to be able to socially connect to other people better, then listen up, here are a couple of tips!
Firstly, don't wear your wizarding robes in public. They're not socially acceptable. Neither are onesies. Or Ugg Boots. But NO. Wizard. Robes!
Next, remember that as much as we wish it was, Hogwarts isn't real, and neither are spells that you can use on your enemies. Muggles (non-fangirls/non-magical people) do not understand spells. So don't speak to them using only curses of parseltongue.
Finally, don't relate every single scenario that happens in your life to Harry Potter. People won't understand you, or if they do they will judge you unless they are also possessed with Fangirlism.
Remember, everything will be ok. Try to integrate with normal society, except at conventions where it's ok to let yourself be yourself...whatever version of yourself that may be! As well, remember that this strategy can apply to anything that you're Fangirling about, but remember that Pop Culture is the best.
Not Justin Bieber.
Inspired by all of my friends' Fangirlism for everything that was ever anything. And my sister's fangirlism. Oh dear! Hehe :P
Thank you for the reference I really needed this.
