#Random

aka Social Media and the horrific and devastating effect that it has on real life.

Let's talk. It's time. Everyone's confused by it, and I know that noone enjoys this conversation, but it has to happen. Hashtagging real life conversations is not ok!

So have you ever had or overheard a conversation that goes something like this:

Friend 1: So I was talking to this guy, and he was like (insert stereotypical boy statement here), and I was like (insert stereotypical girl statement here), and then he was like (insert accidently insulting stereotypical boy statement here)!
Friend 2: Well that's #awkward!

Except they actually say 'Well that's hashtag awkward!'

Now that actually is #awkward!

But now it's getting worse. I understand hashtags on Twitter and Instagram, because they belong there. But today...today *shudders* ... hashtags have taken over facebook. Ok so it wasn't that bad when you shared an Instagram photo to facebook, and people saw the hashtags, but then realised that it was ok because the photo had come from instagram.

But now it's official. Your favourite stalking method for picture of #clouds, #drinkdrankdrunk or #lawlyf (don't judge us...we're law students!) has come to facebook. Whether it's for the better we shall soon see. But for now, enjoy the novelty of hashtags on facebook that actually lead somewhere.

So let's look at the trending social media sites at the moment, half of which I probably don't use, and I'll get you my very...extremely...obviously unbiased, opinion.

1. Twitter...as a relatively new Twitter user (say 3 months?), I'm really loving it. Because I'm living away from home for university, I don't often get access to the newspaper or time to watch the TV or listen to the radio. So Twitter is great for following the news and keeping up to date. And stalking your favourite celebs, if you're that way inclined (notice me Ryan Gosling <3)

2. Facebook...hmm...it was dying out a bit, but hashtagging might bring it back. Facebook will always be there like an old friends, assuming that you have friends on facebook. It's fun and a great procrastination tool.

3. Instagram... I love this app. It's so much fun, and it's great that you can follow celebs as well as your friends. See, they're normal people too! But this video to the right is actually very true...instagram-ing photos of food is so old...

4. Pinterest...um...what. I don't see the point.

5. MySpace...apparently it's making a comeback as a music sharing website, after being bought by Justin Timberlake a while ago. I never had MySpace in the first place, so I can't really judge if it's better or worse. It died out for a while because of facebook, so I wonder if the revamp will work!

6.  Snapchat... hmmm...I've had this app for a couple of months, but I think it does have a limited lifespan. There are only so many selfies that you can send. And only so many 6 second photos and videos that you can put up with before uninstalling this app. It's still installed on my phone though...for now!

7. Tumblr...just no. Tumblr, in my personal opinon, is for 12 year old girls. I'm really, really sorry, and I know that there are many legitimate blogs on Tumblr, except most of them are just people who post a pic and a caption and then say casually, 'Oh yeah, I have a blog'. No...no you don't... But I do have a question! What is it called when you post on Tumblr? Is it Tumbling? Or do you Tumble? Confusion :P That said...I might actually get a Tumblr soon, it could be useful!

I've probably missed a few but these are the ones that seem to be #trending at the moment!

I'll leave you with a quote that someone said to my social sciences teach way back in 2008. At this stage, everyone in middle school (except for me apparently), was using MySpace, and this teacher was onto it and already using Facebook. And a student said to him: 'But sir, Facebook is MySpace for old people.'

Oh, how the times have changed. How wrong they were.
